The Main Challenges in
Gender and Transport
Safety and security
Both the level of insecurity and the amount of women who are victims of sexual harassment in public transportation systems are alarmingly high.
Low Representation
The transportation and infrastructure sectors are predominantly male. At the regional level, women represent less than 15% of the total workforce in the transportation sector.
Infrastructure
The lack of elevators and level crossings, bathrooms with changing tables in subway stations, platforms on sidewalks and priority seats are some of the challenges in terms of infrastructure.
Lack of information
Nowadays, very few mobility surveys show collected data disaggregated by gender or including questions that would allow to better understand the different needs of men and women in terms of mobility.
